Cancun as a Touristic Destination

Cancun as we know it, arises from a dream of visionary men as a touristic development plan of FONATUR in 1974, at that time it was practically a virgin region and since then, Mexican and foreign investors have bet on the growth of the destination turning it into one of the most important and modern cities in Latin America.

Today it is the most important destination in Mexico for international vacationers according to SECTUR.

All this is not a coincidence, Cancun has an endless natural beauty and much to offer to vacationers from all around the world.

On this occasion, we will take a tour of the reasons why Cancun is so recognized and loved by vacationers who visit it from different countries

1.- Beaches

Cancun is located in the Caribbean Sea, and its beaches has an enviable beauty, soft white sand formed by the corals of the Mesoamerican Reef, the sea water has a turquoise color that on the shore is lighter and becomes darker with the depth, the water is crystal clear so you can see at first sight the small fish that swim in the shallow waters.

All the beaches of the Riviera Maya are beautiful, but according to the locals the beaches of Cancun and Isla Mujeres are the best.

2.- The Mayan culture

The Mayan civilization is one of the most important ancient civilizations of America since in almost 3000 years of development they stood out for their many traditions as well as the knowledge of astronomy, mathematics, architecture, sciences and writing.

They were developed in the region that covers Southeast Mexico corresponding to the states of Yucatan, Campeche, Tabasco, Quintana Roo and Chiapas. as well as Guatemala, Belize and the western part of Honduras and El Salvador.

The richness of the archaeological vestiges of the Mayan civilization is a reason why many travelers choose the Riviera Maya as a tourist destination.

Chichén Itzá Yucatan, is one of the main archaeological sites of this civilization and was recognized as a World Heritage by the Unesco.

In Cancun you can find El Rey archaeological site, El Meco archaeological site, Yamil Luúm archaeological site and of course the Mayan Museum of Cancun, where you can find one of the most significant archaeological collections of the Mayan culture in the country.

3.- Natural scenarios

Cancun has large areas of rainforest that make its visitors feel in direct contact with nature. We can not forget that 50 years ago this territory was just an immense jungle.

The cenotes are also a natural scenery much sought after by those who enjoy outdoor activities

4.- It is a strategic point of the Riviera Maya

The Cancun International Airport is located on the outskirts of the city, it is the second busiest airport in the country, after the International Airport of Mexico City, but the most important one in Mexico and Latin America by international passengers.

The airport currently has 4 terminals separated from each other, connected by an internal bus service.

Many tourists who have as final destination another city of the Riviera Maya arrive in Cancun, since it has the necessary infrastructure and is easily connected through roads to other parts of the country.

It also has a bus terminal that operates 24 hours a day and many companies that provide transportation service.

By sea, Cancun connects with Isla Mujeres, Isla Holbox and Cozumel through ferries and private boat companies.

5.- Infrastructure and Activities

The first hotels were inaugurated in 1974 and since then they have not stopped developing the hotel zone. Today Cancun has approximately 150 hotels and all kinds of activities to enjoy holidays, such as natural parks, shopping centers, aquariums, dolphinariums, diving companies, among others. As well as a lot of bars to enjoy the nightlife.

For all that reasons and more, Cancun is a tourist destination chosen by people from all over the world.
