In Cancún we say goodbye to plastic.

As a measure to protect our beautiful destination from the huge amount of garbage generated every day, the Government of Quintana Roo Approved a new law submited by the propelaw on the prevention and integral management of solid waste, and its stipulated in article 126.

This new law prohibits businesses and industries from giving their customers plastic, mainly bags, straws and unicel and through an awareness program it is recommended to use alternative biodegradable materials based on cardboard. To support businesses and industries, the government will take care of providing the necessary information and will also provide a series of options regarding alternative materials with a list of suppliers.

no más plástico en Cancún

This law seeks for the reduction of the environmental impact in our state without affecting the tourists who visit us or the locals who live here.

The United Nations program for the environment, estimates that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea than fish, due to the high consumption we have of single-use materials such as bags and bottles. Worldwide, more than 300 million tons of plastic waste were produced last year and it has an environmental impact on plants and animals, both terran and marine, around 13 million tons out of this 300 millions reach the sea and pollute the ecosystems.

To help the companies adapt to this reform of the new law, they will have a term of 90 days after being published in the Official Newspaper to make the gradual change. With this, we also seek that the consumers can change little by little their habits and avoid using these containers, One of the options provided is to sell plastic bags or unicel containers (carry-out) in order to reduce the big amount of garbage worldwide.

That is why it is very important to have all the support of those who visit us so we can enjoy the natural wealth of the destination for years to come.
